Sonic the Hedgehog 2
It's another day where I go back to the roots of what this blog was. Don't worry, a Dragon Quest II review is coming...eventually. It's a lot more complex than the first one so it'll take a bit. Regardless, here we are, with another video game movie review in the interim!
The story behind this movie is that Dr. Robotnik, played once again by Jim Carrey, has found a way to return to Earth with the help of an echidna named Knuckles, voiced with perfection by Idris Elba. It's up to Sonic, voiced again by Ben Schwartz, and his new friend, a fox named Tails, voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, to team up and stop the villains from reaching the Master Emerald, basically a weapon of mass destruction.
The big takeaway from this film is it is bigger, darker, and it felt more like an adaptation of the games compared to the first one. Now, don't get me wrong. I love the original film, but getting to see more stuff from the game canon get interpreted into a movie was honestly quite a treat for me. Jim Carrey seems appropriately unhinged with his character being hellbent on revenge against Sonic, and I enjoyed getting to see Knuckles' character growth and Sonic's interactions with Tails. Although the human characters are still there, outside of Robotnik, I felt they didn't have as much to do, but I felt it was better for the story, and I mean they had a purpose in this movie. Just...less of one compared to the first one.
Overall, I'd say that this film was everything I had hoped to see in a Sonic movie, and I will say that by the end, I was curious as to where Paramount plans to take the franchise next. If you like the games, this movie is for you, because the shoutouts to all the various games, specifically Sonic 2 and 3, are quite enjoyable. And the climactic battle is awesome.
Next time, well, I assume I'll probably still be doing a review of Dragon Quest II. For now, keep an eye open for that!
