The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
I have so many emotions right now. This movie is the culmination of everything that the previous films built up. It was amazing, beautiful, heart-rending, and everything that you want the ending of a sprawling saga to be.
The story of this film is all about Frodo and Sam, played once again by Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, finally making it to Mordor, but the Ring has been gaining more and more control over Frodo to where it is unclear whether he'll be able to destroy it when the time comes. Meanwhile, the rest of the party helps to rally the rest of Middle-Earth for a final stand against Sauron and his forces. That is the simplest way I could talk about this, since this movie is 3 hours long, so there is so much covered, with a satisfying ending and one of the most airtight plots in all of cinema.
This film features some of the most epic battles, such as Sam's fight against the giant spider Shelob and the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where the lands of Gondor and Rohan team up against the forces of evil. At the same time, the ending scenes are some of the most satisfying yet heartbreaking things you will ever watch. By the end, you have no doubt that the journey is over and Middle-Earth is safe forever, although, I was and still am crying because of the notion that the story has ended.
The best portion of the film is the culmination of the character growth of Sam, where he shows his continuing loyalty to Frodo even as Gollum, played by Andy Serkis, tries to turn Frodo against him, and when Frodo is starting to fall slave to the Ring near the end. Sam goes through the hardest stuff, and yet he always gets back up and is there for his friends, and that really resonates with me, as I am also a firm believer in always being there for your friends no matter what.
Overall, this film is beautiful, and as you can see, it brings out a lot of emotions in me. I think that proves how amazing of a film this is, and the fact that, nearly 20 years after this film first released, I still am feeling the same emotions as when I saw it for the first time.
Next time, we journey back to Hogwarts to witness Harry and his friends' third year, and things get darker and more dangerous with an escaped murderer on the loose, who is hunting for Harry. Keep an eye open for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
