Star Trek TOS S2 Episodes 10 and 11

Okay, it seems like I'm going to be doing two episodes a day for the time being, but we'll see what happens. Regardless, here are the next two episodes I watched.

The first one I watched was called Journey to Babel. Although you would think that the setup, about a bunch of Federation delegates, including the Vulcan ambassador Sarek, who is Spock's father, traveling aboard the Enterprise to the planet Babel to discuss a new planet's induction into the Federation would lead to a more political thriller type episode, well, it doesn't. There are some elements of sabotage among the delegates, including a murder and an attempt on Captain Kirk's life, but what really stands out is the focus on Spock and Sarek's relationship. Sarek has been having heart problems, and only a blood transfusion from Spock during heart surgery will be able to save him. Spock has to choose between duty and his father, and while he is forced into saving his father, it is eventually shown that Spock still worried for him, even though, being Spock, he never admits it. I also like how you see Sarek be cold to Spock in public, but in private, he tells his wife that Spock commands respect in Starfleet. In other words, he's proud of him, as only a Vulcan can be. The sabotage mystery felt like a backseat to Spock and Sarek's relationship as father and son, and honestly, it worked well because of it.

The second episode I watched was Friday's Child. This episode was...alright. It features Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beaming down to a planet to bargain with them for a certain mineral that the Federation desires but things get a little crazy when a Klingon is there, too, trying to get this same mineral for his own race. There is some good character development, especially between how there is a small battle that ends with the leader of the tribe being killed and replaced by the man who supports the Klingon, and the pregnant wife of the previous leader wanting to live and not succumb to the laws of the tribe where she must die because of her pregnancy. Still, though, the episode was largely just whatever to me, and didn't leave that much of an impact, but it's still a fine episode regardless.

Next time, we have Star Trek meets RAPID AGING in a very bizarre episode called The Deadly Years. I remember it being weird so...I guess we'll see what happens.
