I never thought I would say this, but somehow one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time has continuously proven itself to be the Sonic film series. I have to say that even this newest installment, despite some unevenness, this is one of my favorite video game films of all time. The story follows Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, played by Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba as they join forces with Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, to stop the new threat known as Shadow the Hedgehog, played by Keanu Reeves. However, things get a lot more complicated when Robotnik's long lost grandfather, Gerald, also played by Jim Carrey, enters the picture, and has some deep connections with Shadow. I think that one of the best things about this film, to start off, is Shadow himself. From his introductory scene where he is fighting off GUN soldiers, to the scene where he takes on Team Sonic. This was...yeah. This was a real movie that I watched. I have never played Borderlands, so I was going in watching this as just a movie. And as a movie, it was honestly...well, a mess is the best way to describe this, so let's get into what meat there is to this film. So, from what I gather, the plot follows a bounty hunter named Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, who is clearly too old for the role, being in her mid-50s, but okay, and she is sent by a mega corp leader named Atlas, played by Edgar Ramirez, to save his daughter, Tina, played by Ariana Greenblatt. So, basically, MacGuffin hunt. Never seen that before. Here's the thing. I like the visual style of the movie with the bright colors and as much violence as a PG-13 rating will allow, but what is the plot of this movie, really? It's just things happening, which means all the bright visuals are wasted. Even with the star power of Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, this film just wasn't very interesting....
