Sonic the Hedgehog 3
I never thought I would say this, but somehow one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time has continuously proven itself to be the Sonic film series. I have to say that even this newest installment, despite some unevenness, this is one of my favorite video game films of all time.
The story follows Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, played by Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba as they join forces with Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, to stop the new threat known as Shadow the Hedgehog, played by Keanu Reeves. However, things get a lot more complicated when Robotnik's long lost grandfather, Gerald, also played by Jim Carrey, enters the picture, and has some deep connections with Shadow.
I think that one of the best things about this film, to start off, is Shadow himself. From his introductory scene where he is fighting off GUN soldiers, to the scene where he takes on Team Sonic. He shows himself as a dangerous force to be reckoned with. But one thing I really enjoyed seeing was his tragic backstory with Gerald's granddaughter, Maria, played by Alyla Browne, which is basically taken from the games verbatim, but I won't spoil it too much here.
Team Sonic also had some very fun moments, but people probably want to know what I thought about Jim Carrey's turn as not one, but two Robotniks this time around. Well, it's complicated. While Ivo Robotnik, the character we all know and hate, is fantastic as always with his off kilter and Jim Carrey style, Gerald was...contentious for me. I don't mind that he was alive in the film continuity, when he was merely a deceased backstory character in the games. What I do mind is that Gerald mostly came across as an older Ivo Robotnik, and most of the film's running time was dedicated to them doing silly antics together. Gerald shows another side to himself later on in the film, but I didn't like the character as much as the creators were probably banking on.
In conclusion, I'd say that this is a wonderful film with great action, a high octane story, and wonderful character chemistry. The one hit to this otherwise perfect story was the overabundance of Jim Carrey as Ivo and Gerald, which I felt harmed the film rather than helping it and took time away from Shadow's character development. I would still suggest watching it, and it is a fantastic sequel to the second film. Just be prepared for a maybe too large amount of Carrey shenanigans.
