A Minecraft Movie
This was...certainly a movie. To be fair, this wasn't a bad movie, but I'd hesitate to call it good. But let's just get into the review.
So, this film follows four misfits, played by Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Emma Myers, as they get transported to The Overworld, or the world of Minecraft, as I like to call it. Once there, they are joined by Steve, played by Jack Black, and his loyal wolf pal, Dennis as they try to protect this new world from the evil Piglin mage Malgosha, voiced by Rachel House. It's kind of an ADHD plot as it is really just events kind of happening for an hour and a half, but that doesn't mean I hated that.
The beginning was a little slow and was both a big exposition dump as well as just kind of bland world building that wasn't always the best. The actors were...fine, I guess. The standout was obviously Jack Black as Steve, because it's Jack Black having the time of his life in this very weird movie.
The visuals were actually quite amazing, and I loved the more realistic take on the Minecraft style that made sense for a live action film. Some of the fight scenes were pretty fun, especially when Steve makes his first proper appearance since the prologue.
However, I did think that the comedy was kind of whatever. Nothing was really laugh out loud, it felt more like references for people who played Minecraft, which I never really was that person. I usually like the director, Jared Hess's weird humor, but it was conspicuously absent here.
At the end of the day, I felt this was kind of entertaining for an afternoon, but not something I would come back to regularly. This was definitely made for a younger audience and it shows. I know why it is popular, but I don't think it was a film made with me in mind.
