Street Fighter
Today's review is on the 1994 film Street Fighter, the first of two films based on the popular fighting game series. I've only played one of the versions of Street Fighter V once or twice and I wasn't very good at it, so I don't have much experience with the games.
This is an interesting anomaly of a movie for me. When I first saw it, I wasn't overly fond of it, and I wrote it off as a 'whatever' kind of movie. As I have rewatched it, and especially on this most recent viewing, I have found it to be a surprisingly entertaining action movie with almost no intelligence behind it.
Getting into the main plot, it's basically about the Allied Nations (based on the United Nations), who are led by Colonel Guile (played by Jean Claude Van Damme for some reason), try to stop the evil General M. Bison (played by the late Raul Julia in his final film role) from taking over the world. It's honestly a really overstuffed film, which, for some reason, has every Street Fighter character ever made circa 1994, and the film tries to juggle every one of them. It makes for a very hard to follow plot, honestly.
The acting is probably my favorite part of the whole movie, as there is so many good lines and silly performances in it. Jean Claude Van Damme has no idea how to act at all in this movie, and somehow, it's hilarious. At the same time, Raul Julia, a very good actor, is hamming it up like there's no tomorrow and that also turns out to be hilarious. I have to talk about my two favorite lines in the film because of how memorable they are.
The first one is when Chun Li shows a live feed of a truck full of explosives heading to destroy Bison's weapons. His men, who are watching, look on in horror, and one of them, a brute named Zangief says this brilliant line: "Quick! Change the channel!"
The other one is one of the best villain lines in history, in my opinion, and is said by Bison after admitting he doesn't remember massacring Chun Li's village. "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday."
Overall, if you're looking for a brainless action film where you can just enjoy how ridiculous and action packed the story is, with some pretty funny performances, then be sure to check this one out.
My next review will be on one of the first video game movies to actually be fairly popular, and it is still a beloved film to this day: The 1995 film Mortal Kombat.
