Detective Pikachu

This film is the one that, when I first saw it in theaters, felt like definitive proof that there were good video game movies out there. Rewatching it for what seems like the millionth time just reinforces that belief for me. I just legitimately love this movie a lot.

The plot is a little complicated at times, but it basically involves a young man, played by Justice Smith, who teams up with a talking Pikachu, voiced by Ryan Reynolds, to find out what happened to his missing father. The plot is still quite fun despite the fact it's a fairly typical detective plot, and the Pokémon spin on things really gives it a unique feel all the same.

As far as the acting goes, this is actually one of the better acted films as well, with Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds turning in funny, entertaining, and surprisingly earnest performances. I'd also give props to Bill Nighy for his supporting role as the mayor, Howard Clifford, and he's a seriously underrated actor who always is a joy to watch on the screen no matter how large or small his role is, and Kathryn Newton as the junior reporter Lucy Stevens could be good at times, but other times, she was trying too hard, especially in her first scene.

Overall, this is a film I would recommend across the board. It's funny, surprisingly heartwarming at times, has fun action, the final parts of the movie are a bit weird, but you'll be having so much fun, you may not even notice. If you ever get the chance to see this and you haven't before, take the chance and hopefully you'll enjoy yourself as I have way too many times.

Next time, we go back to the world of Rovio's Angry Birds. According to critics, this second film is said to be even more fun than the first one. Is that true? Find out when I review The Angry Birds Movie 2.
