Scream
Okay, it's been a minute, and I've had to take time away from my reviews for my mental health. I legit love doing these reviews for everyone, but I've had to take time for myself. Things might be a little crazy for a bit, but thank you everyone for being so patient while I work through this.
So, obviously, this is not the first Hobbit movie. That is still coming in the future, but for the time being, I don't know what will be coming next in terms of what I watch/review. Regardless, this was a lot better than I had thought it would be, with a slasher movie where the characters know the cliches of slasher movies.
The story follows a girl named Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, who, after a shocking double murder of two of her fellow students, is consistently stalked by the same killer. The concept is very interesting, and I loved the way they played with the typical slasher concept.
Now, I will fully admit that I have not watched many slasher movies (although I have seen the parody version of this, simply called Scary Movie, which was absolutely terrible), but one of my favorite slasher films is the original Halloween from 1978, which was referenced a lot, and seemed to provide a lot of the framework for this one.
Getting to see the villain being a horror movie lover, based on how much they know about horror film trivia, was meta in the best way, and they definitely made every kill shocking, which most slashers don't seem to do. For example, we spend the first 12 minutes of the film with Drew Barrymore, who is the first character to be killed, and you really feel scared for her as they ramp up the tension and take their time to lead up to her shockingly brutal kill.
Overall, if you are a horror fan, and, even more specifically, if you are a slasher fan, you will enjoy this film for the tension, the shocking kills, and for Neve Campbell's fantastic acting as the lead. It's definitely not for everyone, but as a horror fan myself, I definitely felt like I had spent my time wisely watching this.
It'll probably be The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next time, but we'll see what happens. There are some other horror films I might want to review before then, so...keep an eye open for whenever I next review another movie.
