Five Nights at Freddy's

Well, this was an interesting movie. I have a lot of mixed feelings on this one, so let's talk about that.

Based on the famous horror video game of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy's is about a disgraced security guard named Mike Schmidt, played by Josh Hutcherson, who is urged by his career counselor to take a job as a security guard for the now defunct pizzeria/arcade, Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, to help provide for himself and his younger sister, Abby. Sounds fairly similar to the plot of the game, but then the movie decides to do its own thing while also playing with the mythos established in future games.

There is a subplot where Mike is trying to remember who took his younger brother, Garrett, in an incident that happened when he was around 12. Honestly, this subplot was kind of dull and to me, it really distracted from the horror elements. I don't mind a good mystery, but this wasn't a good mystery. It just kind of consists of Mike having the same dream over and over again and eventually, he just kind of is told what happened. While there was some interesting plot developments when it came to the reveal, the reveal felt like it wasn't built up enough.

As for the horror elements, when we just get to see main animatronic mascots of the pizzeria going crazy and killing people, it's scary and intense at the same time, as you'd expect from a horror movie. There was one kill that completely shocked me that it somehow made it into a PG-13 movie. The ending sequences were also quite intense, with a familiar face to many of the fans of the series making an appearance. In fact, this scene acts as sort of an origin story for what the character would eventually become.

Overall, this movie started off good, kind of meandered at points in the middle, but really ended strong. I will have to take off points for the middle in which basically not much really happens and the movie felt like a parody of itself, but regardless, I will day I did say I had fun with this one. If you're looking for an intense horror film that pushes the boundaries of a PG-13 rating, delivers some fairly good scares and kills, and has one hell of an ending, I'd suggest giving this one a try.
