King Kong vs. Godzilla
Right from the get go, you can probably guess this movie is going to be ridiculous and corny from the title alone. Well, I am pleased to say that you would be right. For Godzilla's return to the big screen after seven years, the resulting film does not take itself seriously at all, but for the Godzilla series at this time, I think that is a good thing.
The story basically focuses on Godzilla coming back to Japan while also focusing on a pharmaceutical company trying to boost ratings by exploring the mysterious Faro Island to find a giant evil spirit, which turns out to be King Kong. Once both monsters have their opening scenes out of the way, they just kind of fight for the rest of the movke, and it is hilarious.
I love watching them fight because of how cheesy and ridiculous it is. It's literally two guys in suits punching each other and doing silly stunts in the process. A particular highlight for me is when King Kong shoves a tree down Godzilla's throat, which is as ridiculous as it sounds, and it gets me to laugh every time. However, they randomly give King Kong lightning powers while also giving Godzilla a weakness to electricity because they wanted King Kong to win...I guess. I mean, King Kong was more popular in 1962, I suppose, but Godzilla is one of Japan's flagship creations.
Regardless, this is a cheesy monster movie through and through, so if you are a big Godzilla fan or just like watching films that tend to lean more towards the silly side, I'd say give this one a try. You'll laugh a lot during the fights, even if the human characters are just there to say "Let's have those two fight."
Next time, we take a different spin on the corporations taking ownership of monsters fighting when a mysterious egg is brought to Japan from Infant Island. The one who laid it is none other than one of Godzilla's most famous monster co-stars. Keep an eye open for Mothra vs. Godzilla.
