Star Trek TOS S1 E27 and 28 Review
For these two episodes, I have to say wow, first of all. Mainly because one of the episodes is a mess, while the other is absolutely brilliant and is considered one of the best episodes in all of Star Trek. So, we have a bit of variety for these reviews.
The first episode I will be reviewing is called The Alternative Factor. This episode has a really interesting premise, where the fate of the entire universe is at stake. Instead, we get a man who seems like he is on a regular supply of meth and wants to destroy the universe because he hates the alternate universe version of himself...for some reason. This episode is kind of lazy, and the villain, Lazarus, was just annoying. Nothing else to say. Moving on.
The other episode, on the other hand, is quite better. This episode is called The City on the Edge of Forever, and it definitely earns its beloved reputation. The episode involves McCoy jumping through a time portal after accidentally injecting himself with a large amount of cordrazine, and inadvertently changes time to where the United Federation of Planets never comes to be. Naturally, Kirk and Spock decide to go after him, and end up in 1930s New York, where they meet a kind woman named Edith Keeler, played by Joan Collins, who Kirk begins ro get feelings for. As the story goes on, it is discovered that she is killed in the main timeline, but McCoy saves her which leads to the US staying out of World War II, giving the Nazis an advantage for them to win and presumably rule Earth with an iron fist. Having an episode where the best way to save time is to let someone good die is not an easy pill to swallow, and I think that is what made the episode so good, because it showed the hard choices that lead to utopia. The acting was fantastic, and the scene where Kirk has to watch Keeler die is heartbreaking. Overall, an amazing episode and another one that I consider to be essential Trek.
Next time, we will be wrapping up season 1 with an episode about whole planets dying of some odd madness related disease. Can Kirk and crew find the cause and save the galaxy? Find out next time when I review Operation: Annihilate.
