Star Trek TOS S1E1 Review
It's been a minute since I posted here, but I have been a little bored of superhero films lately so I'm doing something different, specifically, I'm planning on reviewing every piece of Star Trek film and television out there, so hopefully this ends up being enjoyable. I may review only one episode on some days, or many episodes on others. It depends on how much time I have to watch episodes.
Today, I will be reviewing the episode of Star Trek: The Original Series called The Man Trap. This one is one of my favorites, and not just because it was the one that started it all, but I like the tone behind it, and the story is pretty fun for a 60s sci fi television episode.
Basically, in the 23rd century (the setting of the show), the starship Enterprise, captained by James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, goes to a planet called M-113 to have the ship's doctor, Leonard McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley, perform a medical exam on the two inhabitants of the planet, a scientist named Robert Crater, and his wife Nancy, an old flame of McCoy's. After one of the crewmen on the planet mysteriously dies, it's up to Captain Kirk, Doctor McCoy, and Mr. Spock, the Half-Vulcan first officer, played by Leonard Nimoy, to figure out who or what has done this, which gets only more complicated as the mysterious creature starts killing even more of the crew.
The story plays out like a mystery mixed with a horror/creature feature kind of story, which, of course, was very popular in the 60s. The creature, in this case, could make itself look like anyone on the ship, and you don't see the true form until the end. For the 60s, though, it's actually a pretty scary design. I quite liked that, but I'm always one for classic and old-fashioned sci-fi in that vein. For being the first episode of the show, it was quite enjoyable, with the show very quickly endearing you to the characters of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, which is good as it makes me want to experience more adventures with these characters. It's rudimentary, and the characters are not fully fleshed out at this time, but it's a good starting place all the same.
Our next episode focuses on the Enterprise meeting up with a strange young man named Charlie Evans, who is a big yikes in my opinion. Prepare for lots of comments on his character and how terrible he is when I review the episode Charlie X.
