Star Trek TOS S1 E8 and 9 Review

Well, today will be another two episode review, and I clearly have a favorite out of the two, but they both have their moments, in my opinion.

The first episode I will be reviewing is called Miri. The story involves Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beaming down to a planet that seems initially abandoned, but turns out it is populated entirely by children, with the adults having entirely died out due to a mysterious plague. Kirk and his away team end up contracting this plague and have to work to find a cure while also figuring out why the children weren't affected. This one isn't exactly one of my favorites. It has a lot of hammy and corny scenes, which are funny to see, but I wasn't all that invested in the plot. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't really stand out as one I really cared about much.

The other episode I will be reviewing is called Dagger of the Mind. The story behind this one involves a supposedly insane man escaping from a penal colony onto the Enterprise and telling Captain Kirk that he is actually Dr. Simon Van Gelder one of the assistants to the colony's director, Dr. Tristan Adams. When Dr. Adams asks Kirk to return Van Gelder, McCoy feels something is up and so Kirk decides to go down to the planet and question Adams in person. The main plot device of this episode is something called a Neural Neutralizer, which basically is a machine used to alter personalities and control thoughts, and Dr. Adams used it on Dr. Van Gelder to attempt to control him. I loved getting to see Spock mind melding with Van Gelder to see how insane Adams actually was, and there is a scene where the doctor who joins Kirk on the colony, Helen Noel, ends up electrocuting one of the villains after saving Kirk from being experimented on by Adams. The ending to the episode was pretty dark, with Adams getting stuck in the Neural Neutralizer and having his brain functions literally sucked away by it until he just stopped living. Solid sci fi stuff, and I'm always down for a darker story, so this one was a win for me.

Next time we see the Enterprise in conflict with a mysterious alien being who believes the Enterprise has passed into his territory and therefore must be punished. Look out for my review on The Corbomite Maneuver.

I have to say, Mario way back in the early days of gaming used to be so creative, and this game is no exception. Mario Marathon Part 4: Super Mario Land

Well, this was certainly a game, or at least, a good demonstration of one. This is one of the more bizarre Mario games out there, so let's talk about why that is. Super Mario Land was the first portable mainline Mario game, released for Nintendo's black and white Game Boy. So how did Mario on the go end up doing? Well, quite weirdly as mentioned earlier. While it is a 2D platformer like the other games reviewed so far, this game definitely tried to stand out in ways no other Mario game really has done before. The story follows Mario as he tries to save the kingdom of Sarasaland and its princess, Daisy, from the evil alien Tatanga. Already a departure from the norm for sure, but even the enemies are weird. For example, Koopas now turn into bombs when you jump on them instead of just hiding in their shells so you can kick them later on. The Rings of Power Season 1

I wish this was fantastic. I wish this was good. This seemed like it would be such a good series, and...it just wasn't. I'm devastated that this series was just okay, with lots of wasted potential. This is not what Lord of the Rings should be. The story is split up into several parts. We have the elf Galadriel, who teams up with a mysterious man named Halbrand to find and defeat the dark lord Sauron. There is a plotline about the Harfoots, which are basically Hobbits, whose peaceful life is shaken up when a man literally falls from the sky. We have the story of Elrond, another elf who attempts to enlist the help of the Dwarven prince Durin to help save the entire Elven race. And then we have the southlands, the viewpoint characters being an elf named Arondir and a woman named Bronwyn, and they have to contend with orcs attempting to take their lands over.
