Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths

I will admit that I was excited for this one. I have had a fascination with the DC Crime Syndicate for awhile, because I love getting to see evil alternate versions of the heroes I know and love, and wow, this movie did not disappoint. The story follows an alternate universe version of Lex Luthor, played by Chris Noth, who enlists the help of the Justice League in stopping the Crime Syndicate of his universe from destroying reality, courtesy of the sociopathic Owlman, played by James Woods. I quite liked the visuals and the action was great, with some pretty solid performances throughout. The battles against the Crime Syndicate were a dream come true, because I have wanted to see that play out in a movie for the longest time. I do feel that they didn't focus much on how corrupt the alternate earth was, which could have been an interesting way to build the world, but they managed to impress me in quite another way: Owlman. His whole character is nihilistic and wants to destroy Earth...

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

I have to admit that I love a good story with the villain running the country, and this one ended up being quite entertaining. There was a lot of fun action scenes and it was a thrill ride from beginning to end. The story is about Superman, played by Tim Daly, and Batman, played by Kevin Conroy, teaming up after president Lex Luthor, played by Clancy Brown, frames Superman for the death of Metallo and declares a bounty on him. I think I really liked getting to see Superman and Batman fighting together and they clearly played off of each other super well. Kevin Conroy plays Batman as stoic and serious, while Tim Daly plays Superman as a good man who isn't afraid to fight to protect his good name. The action is really where this movie shines the most, with scenes of them fighting against a group of supervillains, against Lex Luthor's personal squad, and, my personal favorite, against Shazam and Hawkman. The scenes were big, intense, and explosive in more ways than one, and it was...

Green Lantern: First Flight

Why is it that DC animated movies are just so good? Every time I watch one, the care that is put into them just amazes me, and this one was no different. The story deals with Hal Jordan, voiced by Christopher Meloni, as he goes on his first mission as a Green Lantern, under the guidance of Sinestro, voiced by Victor Garber. Bur what seems like a simple mission ends up being a lot more and the fate of the entire universe is at stake. This film dealt really well with the Green Lantern Corps not trusting Hal as a member and showing him growing and becoming a hero to the surprise of all. I felt Meloni really played the character with the right sense of duty and fun. The absolute standout to me, though, was Sinestro. Victor Garber is an amazing, yet underrated actor, and watching him portray the many, many layers of Sinestro was very entertaining. He was by far my favorite character of the movie and I feel his character arc was done justice. Overall, I really enjoyed this film for not only ...

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Oh, boy. This was a movie. It sounds like this should have been amazing. It was a Wolverine origin story at a time when Wolverine was considered to be one of the coolest superheroes around. Why then did they end up doing this mess of a movie instead? The story is about...well, you know, there was a lot of threads that really went nowhere. Something about Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, going after Sabretooth, played by Liev Schrieber, because he killed his girlfriend and somehow that led to him getting adamantium grafted onto his skeleton by William Stryker, played by Danny Huston. If that sounds coherent to you, then maybe you'll like this, but I was struggling to find a reason for this movie to exist. The story was not engaging, although the action was generally pretty good. My issue was that there was no good reason for the action to exist. This film literally moved from one scene to another without any rhyme or reason, and it just kept going somehow. I thought the acting was...

Wonder Woman (Animated)

I wasn't sure what this film would be like going in, but I had heard it plays out pretty similarly to the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, and I agree that it does, but I think I liked this one better, being completely transparent. The story is pretty similar to the 2017 film, where Wonder Woman, played by Keri Russell, goes up against the god of war Ares, played by Alfred Molina, with the help of Steve Trevor, played by Nathan Fillion. The tone of this film was a lot more lighthearted than the 2017 film, which was the best part for me, since it allowed me to care about the characters more. Not knocking the 2017 film, but it felt more melodramatic where this one was more straightforward. I also liked how this film tackles sexism head on, with Steve starting out as a misogynistic womanizer who Diana allows to stay only because he knows more about the modern world than her, but it grows to where he respects Diana as a person and he actually cares for her by the end, and it doesn't feel l...

The Dark Knight

Wow, I really don't watch this movie enough. I have to admit that I enjoyed myself a lot, and looking at it with a reviewer's eye, there is a lot I noticed that I hadn't really accounted for in the past, so let's get into it. The story of this film is a sequel to Batman Begins, and it focuses on Batman, played again by Christian Bale, who ends up having to deal with his greatest adversary yet: The psychopathic Joker, played to perfection by Heath Ledger. Helping him in his crusade is Lt. James Gordon, played by Gary Oldman, and the new district attorney Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart. Where Batman Begins feels like a pretty solid origin story, this one goes deeper and darker, with a lot more focus on character studies, while still giving a good superhero experience all the same. What really stood out was the focus on Batman, the Joker, and Harvey Dent, because that is really what this movie is all about. You have Batman, who is trying to be a hero but things have ...

Batman: Gotham Knight

This was quite a unique picture to watch, especially because it was made by six different Japanese animation studios. It is an anthology film split into about six ten minute stories, so I've decided I will review each segment individually. The first segment was called 'Have I Got a Story For You', which deals with a group of skater kids who each had an encounter with Batman, voiced by Kevin Conroy. I think the coolest part was how they depicted Batman in different ways depending on who was telling the story, and it was very creative, and was the biggest thing that stood out to me. The story wasn't too great, but the visuals made up for it, in my opinion. The second segment was called 'Crossfire.' The story behind this one was basically detective Crispus Allen, voiced by Gary Dourdan, who is learning to trust Batman due to feeling the police are relying too much on his vigilantism. The best part of this one was the fact there was an all out shootout, hence the na...

The Incredible Hulk

Well, I certainly was expecting my view on this movie to change a bit more than it ended up being, especially after the underrated masterpiece that was the 2003 film, but I still ended up liking it, although, I do have a few issues I do want to discuss all the same. This movie is about Bruce Banner, played by Edward Norton, who is on the run from General Thaddeus Ross, played by William Hurt, who wants to use the power of the Hulk to make weapons. Along the way, Bruce reconnects with the general's daughter Betty, played by Liv Tyler, and finds a powerful adversary in Emil Blonsky, or the Abomination, played by Tim Roth. First and foremost, this film was more of an action packed chase, which I honestly didn't mind too much, since chase scenes always tend to get my blood pumping. We also get a lot more Hulk action with him actively going up against the military and later the Abomination. Unfortunately, where the original film was more a look into the tortured psyche and split per...

Iron Man

It is good to be back in the game of reviewing superhero movies, and what a movie this was to review. As I am a big fan of Marvel films, I naturally have a lot of good to say about this one, as it brought the Marvel characters into the public eye like never before. This film focuses on the origin story of arms dealer Tony Stark, who becomes the armored superhero Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., after being captured by a terrorist organization known as the Ten Rings and learning there is more to Stark Industries than he previously thought. It's a pretty simple, but effective origin story and it really helps you be able to sympathize with Iron Man as a character, since this is more of a character piece than previous Marvel films, although there is still a fair amount of action. Most of the action was good, especially the ones where he is going up against the terrorists, but the final battle felt choppy and kind of slow to me. The acting is pretty solid, with Robert Downey Jr., ...

Uncharted

I will fully admit that I was excited to watch this. I think Tom Holland is a phenomenal actor and he was the biggest selling point for me. On my first watchthrough, I enjoyed it a lot, honestly. The story follows Nathan Drake, played by Tom Holland, who is recruited by Victor Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg, to search for a treasure left by Magellan, or rather Magellan's captain. Along the way, he has to deal with Santiago Mercado, played by Antonio Banderas, and his attempts to get the treasure. The plot was pretty simple, but I still enjoyed everything along the way. The first part of the movie had like a spy/National Treasure type of feel to it, with the team stealing an item to get to the treasure, and later solving puzzles, while the second part was pure action, with one of the best final acts I have seen in a video game movie. It involves a battle on pirate ships that are in the sky, so pretty cool stuff. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg were definitely the standouts and thei...

Game Review: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

First off, in a bizarre twist, I did not actually beat this game, and that is actually my biggest complaint on it and you will see why. Obviously, this game plays as a sequel to Yooka-Laylee, with the same main characters and same villain as before except now Capital B has created a hive mind weapon to control the bees in the royal stingdom and you have to find all the captured bees and make it through his impossible lair to do so. The game is split into the overworld, which is a top down puzzle solving experience, and then there are the chapters, which are side scrolling segments reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country. Oh, how this game could have been great. Every level you do is so fun to explore, I actually found all the secrets and saved all the bees before going to the impossible lair. Then all hell broke loose.  While the main levels are fun and somewhat challenging, the impossible lair lives up to its name...a little too well. From how far I got before dying, which was nearly h...

Game Review: Yooka-Laylee

Okay, I was way too harsh on this game the last time I played through it. That's the first thing I want to say as a followup to how I wasn't overly excited about how this game was going to turn our. So, the game follows a chameleon named Yooka and his friend, a bat named Laylee, as the adventure through the corporate lair of the evil Capital B, and try to reclaim the lost pages of their magical book. It's a pretty standard collect-a-thon plot, but the game still ended up being quite fun to explore and go through overall. While the gameplay, as you can tell from the name, is about collecting as many items as possible to progress through the game, it still was fun to me.  I should explain my history with this game before I got further. When I was a child, I owned a Nintendo 64 and I loved two games on it above all else: Banjo Kazooie and its sequel Banjo Tooie. I always wanted to see what a modern iteration of this game would be like because the developers got bought out by m...
