Game Review: Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

First off, in a bizarre twist, I did not actually beat this game, and that is actually my biggest complaint on it and you will see why.

Obviously, this game plays as a sequel to Yooka-Laylee, with the same main characters and same villain as before except now Capital B has created a hive mind weapon to control the bees in the royal stingdom and you have to find all the captured bees and make it through his impossible lair to do so.

The game is split into the overworld, which is a top down puzzle solving experience, and then there are the chapters, which are side scrolling segments reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country.

Oh, how this game could have been great. Every level you do is so fun to explore, I actually found all the secrets and saved all the bees before going to the impossible lair. Then all hell broke loose.

While the main levels are fun and somewhat challenging, the impossible lair lives up to its name...a little too well. From how far I got before dying, which was nearly halfway, I was stressed the entire time. Every jump you make has to be perfect, or you will lose a hit, and there are hazards literally everywhere to where there is no room for error, and IT IS LONG, apparently it's a 15 minute endeavor for a perfect run. After ten attempts I literally gave up because the game was enjoying how ridiculously hard its final level was.

After a fun 40 levels or so, a disappointing last level completely ruined this for me. I'm all for hard games, but even Mega Man, of which I am a big fan, was easier to maneuver through and more fun than this sadistic method of torture.

I would recommend it if you like platforming games but are also a masochist who enjoys a game that takes glee in torturing you with a level that was way harder than it should have been. Other than that, us sane people will play something that won't make our blood boil.

Next time, an actual RPG makes its appearance, which means I will be intertwining my gaming with some movie reviews because RPGs, especially this one, are really long. Look out for Final Fantasy X.
