Wonder Woman (Animated)

I wasn't sure what this film would be like going in, but I had heard it plays out pretty similarly to the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, and I agree that it does, but I think I liked this one better, being completely transparent.

The story is pretty similar to the 2017 film, where Wonder Woman, played by Keri Russell, goes up against the god of war Ares, played by Alfred Molina, with the help of Steve Trevor, played by Nathan Fillion.

The tone of this film was a lot more lighthearted than the 2017 film, which was the best part for me, since it allowed me to care about the characters more. Not knocking the 2017 film, but it felt more melodramatic where this one was more straightforward.

I also liked how this film tackles sexism head on, with Steve starting out as a misogynistic womanizer who Diana allows to stay only because he knows more about the modern world than her, but it grows to where he respects Diana as a person and he actually cares for her by the end, and it doesn't feel lazily written.

Diana was probably my favorite part of the movie, constantly throwing shade at Steve every time he tries to make a move on her, which was so cathartic to see, honestly. I liked her one scene with Etta Candy as well, where she just sees through her ridiculous flirting with Steve, and the scene was really funny yet simple.

Overall, I feel this is probably my favorite Wonder Woman movie I have seen so far. It's funny, the characters feel three dimensional, there's a lot of growth, but at the same time, the film is still dark and serious when it needs to be. Check this movie out because I think you'll end up being quite surprised with the result.

Next time, we go into the origin story (?) of one of Marvel's most famous superheroes...and the complete ruination of another one. That's right. I'll be reviewing X-Men Origins: Wolverine this next time.
